I was browsing around over on the OneMonk boards and ran across an exultant cry of joy about positive reviews of Mech Attack. Intrigued, I had a glance over at Wargame Vault and saw how expensive the game is, and promptly put the big bundle in the cart. Then looking at the other products button, saw the hexes and put those in the cart as well.
The review that mentioned the picture heavy battle report, and that same battle report were very encouraging and enticing. I have a son of my own who I am just starting to play games with. So far it has been a space ship fleet game and a massed unit fantasy game. Both are fun and were fun to build, but this looks a little more up my alley. I like to make machinegun noises and explosions as I play. So does the cub scout.
I've been playing games for thirty years. Most of that has been rpgs, but the lesser portion of Ogre, CarWars, Battletech and the occasional spaceship fleet game have been enough that I'm not entirely new to wargaming. I even had a two month flirtation with 40K, but that was only last winter.
Just recently, I decided to chuck rpgs and delve more into wargames. Since then I've been looking for the games to get into. Turns out there are tons out there of all sorts. I love the look of the finely detailed and beutifully painted models for the many hobby games out there. I had just about convinced myself to start buying boxes of models, but the cost in both money and time is prohibitive. For a stopgap, I began making paper and foamcore models, and we had a few good fun games with them, and shall have more. Then I saw this game. I am stoked!

Welcome back to wargaming! Paper games are a great way to game inexpensively and with minimal buy in. If you want to get into miniatures cheaply, check out the wealth of cheap now-defunct clix and other prepaited games (Mage knight, old heroclix, D@D miniatures game, Heroscape, etc) for figures and some of the small skirmish scale (8-15 figs a side) games that don't require you to use their figures such as Song of Blades and Heroes.
My gaming club is hooked on skirmish games now and we've used many of those figures rebased (and sometimes repainted).

Welcome! I'm glad you decided to check out Mech Attack... Thanks!
I too started out with RPG's and gradually migrated to playing wargames instead. It's not that I don't enjoy RPG's, it's just that RPG's require more players than a wargame... so I think I need more friends...(griN)

Just so. Role playing games are fun, but they have a couple of signifigant drawbacks for someone with a limited time allowance. You have to get the schedules of four to eight people to coincide on a regular basis, and pick up or opportunity games are very dificult to get people into. There is also the issue of prep time. With an rpg, you have a lot of setup as a GM, whereas with a wargame you scatter some terrain about line up your units and go.
It just came to me one night that I'd be better off moving to wargaming. Since then I have had several fun games with my children. Contrasted to rpgs of which I had only one game that did not go so well with the eldest, the wargames are a big hit. I may even get the wife involved. That would cost me a scrabble game or two, I'm afraid.
As to pics and reports and questions, I shall be most happy to share, once I get any of the above. I have to wait till after the 10th to buy anything, as the stocking fund is exhausted for the year.

I am rather stoked. Tomorow I will have the money to get all my game stuff which includes Mech Attack (the bundle from wargame vault). I'm also getting the rules and cards for Firestorm Armada. I was thinking about getting some models as well, but I already have three fleets of models I made myself. I find that making my models myself is cheap and rewarding in itself.

I got it! Bought the bundle from the Vault. I must say I am not at all disapointed. I'm going to hold off to review it until I get a game or two played to see if it as nifty and simple as it looks to be. I love how the damage profiles work together to leave chunks of ceramic composite armor all over the battlefield.

So far I'm having fun putting models together, but it is a slow process for me. Kind of a steep start up curve.

It gets easier as you go, once you get your technique down

Today the whole family joined in a folding and gluing party. We got everything folded on the red line and it is now all drying to be cut out later. Built model count, two infantry, two tanks, two heavy mechs and two medium mechs, but nothing on a base yet.

The thing that I really liked about this game when I first started playing is that you really don't need much for a decent battle. My first real game was based on only 25 build points I think--it's the picture heavy battle report that I posted. That is a great feature for beginners. Then, just crank out a few models here and there over a couple of weeks and you'll have enough for some serious engagements!
Share some pics when you get a chance.

Good point. Don't think that you have to print and assemble every model in the pack. You only need to build whatever units and items that you want to play with at the time. We've just included lots of different options for you to choose from...

I'm not sure my eight year old son could think tactically about more than a few units anyway. I believe with a pair of heavies he can have planty of fun pounding a couple tanks and some infantry, or whatever I field for the equivalent points. Maybe run a scenario based on Steve Jackson's Ogre. Whimpy units try to stop a single massive unit from wiping out a Command Post.

Actually, I think the scenarios from OGRE are well suited for Armor Grid. Give him a heavy mech and let him blast away!
