So tonight, I got my nine year old to play with me, our first game of Mech Attack. Earlier in the evening, we played our first game of Battletech using their free Intro rules, so we had a basis for comparison.
The differences are pretty stark, especially since I had to print Battletech in black and white (the map board does not convert well, to be sure.) The scale is also very different between the 15mm and the roughly 3mm scale paper standees.
My boy and I both enjoyed both games. I like the Mech Attack grid armor a bit better and he likes the BT armor diagrams a bit better. The d10 vs 2d6 issue never really came up.
As with most games we play, it was pretty much walk up and slug it out at point blank range. At the end, I had four columns down to one or no armor left, and the boy had one column down so far, then I got in a shot from the machine gun and got a 9 on the crit roll. Whew. He has only skunked me on our first time playing five or six different games, so it was a nice change.
So I got the game several months ago, but I keep hitting the assembly wall and putting it away to work on later. Finally I had a couple heavy mechs and some vehicles and troops built, but this first game was all about the heavies. I set up some terrain, and off we went.
I think it is a combination of my ADD and my demiarthritic hands that has made the process so slow.
Anyway, great game, once I get a few things built. Your minis look fantastic, but are kind of a hassle to build, especially cutting out (robocutter is about 15th on the wants it list). I believe I will try to make some simplified versions for my own use, concentrating a bit less on the WYSIWYG (which is still the awesome!)
