I've been slowly (very slowly) trying to come up with stats for some Battletech Mech minis. One of my favorite mechs is the Panther - a light mech with a BA Gun (PPC). It's also a bit slower than most other light mechs.
So, to my suggestions: 1 - allow a mech/vehicle (?) to mount a weapon from a higher size class. This would leave less Bp for more weapons and/or armor. Maybe limit this to 1 weapon per mech.
2 - allow a mech to reduce it's engine to have more Bp for weapons/armor. Reduce the Mv by 1 and gain 2 extra Bp's.
Note - I have not playtested any of this, or really thought hard about it.

What you've suggested is already in the works for version 2. I just have to find a faster gear and get it done. My new position at work has kept me otherwise occupied In the new rules, you will be able to purchase weapons larger than your class.. but you will obviously have less Bp to spend on armor and other upgrades, so it balances out. This approach takes away some of the "distinction" between the classes, but it allows for a wider variety of designs overall.

Great minds think alike! ;D
Will there be a limit on larger weapons purchase? Like limiting the number of "upgrades" or the upgrade can only be 1 higher (light can only equip light or medium weapons, but not heavy).
What about giving the option on engine upgrades? Ex: for 2 Bp, you can increase Mv by 1 OR decrease Tp by 1.
