At the end of the round my mech had 9 heat. It dissipated 4 leaving 5. We rolled on the chart. Do I still have 5 heat at the start of the next round, or does the roll clear the rest of it away?
Thanks!

Thanks! Your mech has the heat sink capacity to vent 4 heat without the risk of damage; the remaining 5 heat is still vented but not without the risk of damage. The current rules (1.5) state that a single roll would be made on the Mech Critical Heat Table with +1 for each unvented heat past the first. In your example you have 5 unvented heat, so that is one +4 roll on the Mech Critical Heat Table. You do not carry over any heat to the next round; this greatly simplifies record keeping. In the 2.0 draft rules, however, there is a minor change to simplify things and at the same time increase the importance of managing heat. The draft rules state that a single roll would be made on the Mech Critical Heat Table with +1 for each unvented heat. So in your example, you would have 5 unvented heat and make one +5 roll. I needed to simplify managing heat and make heat more of a factor in the game; there needed to be a little more "pain" for overheating. That being said... I really need wording other than "unvented"; because the heat is indeed vented and it doesn't carry over to the next round, just not without the risk of damage. Maybe? - "During the Heat Phase, a Mech vents accumulated heat equal to its Heat Control (Hc) value. Any amount of heat remaining generates a single roll on the Mech Critical Heat Table before being discarded; add 1 to the roll for each heat exceeding your Heat Control (Hc) value. For example, three remaining heat would generate a D10+3 heat roll."

Thanks, that clears it up. I don't see that it explicitly says to remove the heat. It does say, "Any amount of heat remaining after venting..." which made me think the heat remained after the heat phase.
I like the change, was thinking of adjusting my chart by 1 for each item and dropping the whole -1 step.

The key phrase you missed is "before being discarded"... but it might be less confusing if I explicitly stated heat does not carry over.
