.... or better, Heroscape terrain?
I own a lot of HS terrain, i used it for a Battletech game and, water deep apart, it works great.
How should i modify the rules to play Mech Attack on a hex based map? And (this may be a stupid question, as oi have just read the rules one time) are elevations allowed more than 2 levels?

I would think you could just change all the measurements from inches to hexes and be good to go.

It would be perfectly fine to use hex grids. You would need to have all units based the same and this would alter the Firing/Targeting Arcs for Vehicles, but as long as you keep the rules consistent it shouldn't make much of a difference. Will you count the range in hexes or measure it in inches to keep more of a straight line?
Let us know how it plays on a hex map. Like all house rules, just make sure all players agree to using the hex map.

Thanks for the fast answers. I plan to play this game with 2 gaming groups: with my friends i will use the "3D" original rules, while with my son and some of his friends i'll try the hex terrain, counting hexes for ranges: most of that kids are not "trained" enough to start playing with rulers (and they tend to bump the table a lot also ). I'll try to use vehicles as they are, making them "doublebased" (2 hexes base)... it will become a bit out of scale (mechs should have the bigger bases), and i'm unsure if it can works, but my first try will be in that direction.

I don't think you will have a problem with the game itself if you redesign the bases to fit you hexes--bigger bases just make the unit a "multi-hex" unit. 1 Hex = 1" of range should work just fine, I think.
If you can, post some pictures of what you come up with and let us know how it played.

I played a game at the weekend using Heroclix MechWarrior minis and Herscape tiles and it worked great. There's some jiggery-pokery with the Mechs as their bases are a little too large for HS tiles but it never really became an issue.
I didn't have enough tiles for the terrain to be fully in proportion so the entire play area was flat except woodland which was raised by one or two levels representing woods and forests / hills were the same so either one, two or three levels and so on. I'll get some pics up asap.
You need a heap of tiles though. I have 2 or 3 basic sets and a Swarm of the Marro set and it only just created a 36 by 18 hex area (so half what is recommended in the rules. Not a problem mind you as my table isn't much bigger than that : )
