Here is a few samples of some early designs for a system of multi-layered six inch hex tiles. The basic design is a collection of 12 backgrounds/terrain with overlays that can be turned on or off to create a huge variety of battlefield tiles. The overlays include hex grids (3/4, 1, 1-1/2, 2, 3 inch and 2 inch point-to-point 'Scape hexes in black and light gray), paved and dirt roads (straight, curves, and a bunch of intersections), rivers, battle and rock debris, and vegetation overlays (I may do fog, smoke, islands, and icebergs too). I'm also going to include interlocking tabs on the corners similar to the ones designed by Jim at the One Monk Forums (seen ) to help keep the battlefield together. Here are some early images of the first eight terrains and the early paved roads and hex grid overlays. I've altered the road curves to be a little more realistic, but it's important to remember that in the future all roads will be at 60 degree angles! I would like to thank Jim Hartman for being gracious enough to allow us to incorporate the interlocking tabs into our design and I would also like to send out some major props to Tugunmojo for inspiring this idea! Thanks guys! -Matt

Ooh! Need craters on one layer! Big craters, small craters, little clusters of craters where bomblets went off.

Good call on the craters! Perhaps some "concrete" hexes for urban areas. I'm imagining simple grey tiles to represent generic urban area and buildings being used to specific areas/objectives. Just an idea, don't pay any attention to it . . . unless you like it!

Craters are an excellent idea! I'll see what I can do. Urban Asphalt is already completed. So far the terrains include: - GrasslandForest
- Autumn Forest
- Rocky Desert
- Sandy Desert
- Swamp
- Asphalt
- Gray Stone
- Snow
- Shallow Water
- Deep Water
- Ice Flow
- Uncolored/Blank
The Paved Road, Dirt Road, and River Layers each include a combination of 24 different layers including dead ends, straight sections, bends, and intersections (with different layouts of three, four, five, and six roads). They layers can be stacked to produce a huge number of combinations and variations. Or you can print out the road sections over the blank tile to cut them out as indivdual pieces that you can manually place over your tiles/battlefield.
