The paper mechs for MechAttack are some of the coolest 2.5 d models out there, but I've always been a devotee of 3d miniatures for gaming. When it came to Mech Attack, I settled on Mechwarrior clix minis as an affordable choice.
So I finally got a camera and photographed some of the rebased mechwarrior minis I've been working on. This was going to be a gallery of repainted figs, but the existing paintjobs aren't bad at all and I was eager to get the figs on the board for some gaming last weekend so I stuck with the existing paintjobs and am quite happy with the results.
The basing is simply my Magic Mud mix ( 1 tblsp of sheetrock paint texture per oz of brown paint) with a drybrush of Folk Art "Teddy Bear Tan". Asside from a few of the grey rocks from MW infantry stands that I glued to the bases, and the warhammer model (explained below), all dips and mounds are just clumps of magic mud pushed into shape.
The three different bases I used were:
-25mm Plastic hexes from EM4 for infantry
-45mm GF9 Econobases hexes for Mechs and very small vehicles
-45mmx70mm GF9 econobasses rectangles for small and medium vehicles
The shapes aren't exactly to MAttack stats, but they work well. The rectangle does give the vehicles a slightly wider front arc, but it doesn't seem to affect the balance of the game.
Here's a few minor mods to models.
For some reason the pose for the Warhammer IIC was that of a mech falling backwards. Raising the right leg up (there's a piece of clicky base under the basing for elevation) and rotating the left leg back makes for a much better pose without having to modify the knee joints.
Forestry Mechs. Love the basic look, hated the chainsaw. Trimmed down a twin linked laser piece from "Steel Warriors" and glued it in place of the chainsaw.
MW tanks had too many missile launchers and extra guns all over the place. Trimmed a few off, a few dabs of paint at the cuts and voila! The tanks look better and the fit better with Mech Attack rules.
