As soon as I purchased Mech Attack, I had hoped that there was going to be a Starship Attack rule set. I really like the Mech rules. Would there be problems with mixing Mech and Starship's together? Like in Robotech where they used the Daedalus attack. Or ultra-light starships in the atmosphere that are under attack by Heavy Mech from the surface.
Also, would starship have more armor? Such as plating (a row of 10 for each side of a hex that surrounds the ship) or would the standard row of 10 be enough? They should be able to take a greater pounding than a normal Mech.
Anyway, I would really like to see a Starship edition especially if there is another rule set being planned for release.

To me mechs in space make the most sense when they are used in a "crowded" space setting, like an asteroid mining field or elaborate space station complex. These settings would require the maneuverability of manipulator arms that could be fitted with weapons during hostile encounters. These mechs would not necessarily need to be humanoid, but perhaps that would make them easier to pilot.
I've always liked the way Robotech explained the need for humanoid mechs. The Zentradi were huge humanoid aliens, so the earth required large battloids to engage them. Or more simply: big aliens need to be stopped by big robots. This did make the transforming SDF-1 seem a little silly (why would they need a robot THAT big?!?!), but the fight scenes easily made up for it. Robotech: Macross Saga and the New Generation we definitely the biggest influences on my love of mecha!
For a long time I've been toying with the idea of wider armor grids. I'm thinking about grids that are twenty or thirty columns wide (rolling a D20 or D30 for hit location). This could represent huge starships, giant land vehicles, or mech carrying dropships. Not quite the size of an SDF-1 or Star Wars Star Destroyer, but pretty darn big. I suppose we could have even wider armor grids (D100 grids) for aircraft carrier sized vehicles.
This has two challenges for game play. First is targeting such a big vehicle- it should be relatively impossible to miss. How would this effect gameplay. Defenses would be key, but they should be targeted separately. But the really tricky part is creating build point values to maintain balanced play. Perhaps it would be best to have it be a stand-alone mission...

Another problem with d100 grids would be having a card large enough. What I would suggest would be coordinate graph type grid. the attacker would roll two d10s and find the spot on the grid that corresponded with the numbers. It would take away the ability to have layers though. At the same time, hitting the exact spot again would be hard.

Or just resort to writing an app to keep track of it. Then you would just have to input the location and damage done.

Perhaps it would just be simpler to divide larger vehicles into sections where each gets its own standard ten column armor grid. This would probably require a special critical damage chart, or at least an adapted one. I could see a scenario where a small group of revolutionary mech fighter pilots take on a gigantic super-weapon juggernaut: the Dread-Tank, with it's own mech fighters and turret defenses. If the Dread-Tank is not destroyed in a set number of turns, it will power up and fire it's weapon- annihilating the attackers' base and ending the revolution. It would seem impenetrable (with maybe six to ten armor grids and ten layers of armor on each!), but the attackers' spies have revealed that it has a major weakness: one of its armor grids' has a single column that's completely empty! Hitting that one column would set off a chain reaction, destroying the whole thing. But that would be a tricky shot! That target would practically be no larger than the average over-sized desert rodent... Yes, that's a totally original idea. Why do you ask?

Yes, that's a totally original idea. Why do you ask? Sounds familiar… Would you just choose the closest section to fire at or could you fire at any section? If you could fire at any section, the critical hit table would be very different; you could just concentrate fire on one part and destroy it with the system we have so far. I like the idea though.

We're also assuming that this would be a Capitol ship versus Capitol ship game. If it was a fighter versus fighter game, the system practically lends itself to one.

In a capitol ship game, fighter squadrons would be handled just as infantry are in the MA game.

If you're going to have a space battle among starships, I think it's mandatory to incorporate shields. Maybe have 4 armor grids to represent shields; one each for starboard, port, forward, and aft. Then have a single armor grid to represent the hull. Only the hull grid would have a critical systems area.
An attacker would have to deplete the shield then chew through the hull to get to the critical systems area.
You could divert shield energy in-game by removing lower blocks from one grid to repair damaged blocks in another grid.

That's an interesting idea. Could shields regenerate or would that be too annoying? I was also thinking of having that coordinate grid system I thought of, but maybe there be multiple layers. So if you hit in a hole in a region that's already hit then you flip to the next grid and apply. You could have 3d damage profiles for weapons.

I know this is kinda reviving an old thread but I'd still love to see a starship version made with lots of ships lol! Me and a couple friends were just talking about this the other day, would definitely make for a good kickstarter project!
